Elizabeth Evelyn Bruce, (née Lyons) passed Wednesday evening, February 28, 2018 at the age of 86 at the Ottawa General Hospital. Loving wife of the late Dexter Bruce, Bridgewater, NS. Loving mother and dear friend to her son, John Bruce of Manotick, ON, and grandmother to her precious and adored granddaughter, Bridget Bruce, Manotick, ON. Daughter of the late Malcolm and Viola Lyons, Ottawa, sister and best friend to Shirley Campbell (Lyons), Southbury, CT, and sister to the late Donald Lyons, Bedford, NS. Sister-in-law to Sandra Bruce and the late Dan Bruce, Mahone Bay, NS and the late Beth and Ralph Cheney, Fredericton, NB. She will be remembered fondly by her nieces and nephews; Bruce Campbell, Providence, RI; Carolyn Campbell Washington, DC; Krista Frankcom, Hillsdale, ON; Heidi Hickey, Bedford, NS; Sue Watts, Saint John, NB; Ted Cheney, Westfield, NB; Dexter Bruce, Ottawa, ON; and Kirstie Bruce, Mahone Bay, NS. Loved and missed by her dear friends, Antoinette and Mariam Majaess. Elizabeth (Betty) was born in Ottawa, ON. She moved to London, ON and then to Halifax, NS where she met Dexter Bruce after he returned from the Korean War and was attending Dalhousie University. They married in May of 1956. They moved to Montreal and lived in NDG. In 1978 they moved to Mitchell, ON to open a Stedman’s store that they operated until moving back to Bridgewater, NS in 1989. They were both active at Trinity Anglican church in Bridgewater and made many friends while they resided there. Dexter passed away in 2006, and in 2013, Elizabeth moved to Ottawa to be closer to her only grandchild, Bridget and live with her son, John. Betty always saw the positive in everything and was a perpetual optimist. All throughout her life, regardless of good or bad times, she would always be quick to smile, and open for a chat about anything. She always had something to add to the conversation and many will remember her for her ease and open acceptance of anyone she met. The interment of her ashes will be at Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa, sometime this spring and a celebration of her life is to be arranged this summer for all friends and family in Bridgewater, NS, TBA.
