Voglers Cove shots-fired call results in charges against local senior

by KEITH CORCORAN

RCMP filed weapons charges against a Lunenburg County man, alleging he used an imitation long gun to fire a shot at a Vogler's Cove property inhabited by another man accused of historical sex crimes.

In court records filed at the Bridgewater courthouse, police say information gleaned from a shots-fired call on September 3 indicated one man could see from his doorway another man pointing a gun toward his home from a nearby parked truck.

Alleged details concerning the incident were outlined in a document law enforcement presented to a judge to justify a search warrant for a Highway 331 home in Cherry Hill. The unsealed records were obtained by LighthouseNOW.

The gun's barrel pointed "through the passenger side window" and, when a man stepped outside onto a patio, a "pop sound" was heard before the truck drove away, reads the document. A pellet was found between the panes of a broken second floor window. There were no reports of any injuries. Police information in the document suggests the two men know each other and one recognized the other as the incident carried out. An excerpt of a statement contained in the court documents suggested the friendship deteriorated after charges were filed against one of them.

RCMP were dispatched to the call shortly after noon. Officers geared-up in body armour before temporarily blocking a road and arresting a suspect in Cherry Hill.

Law enforcement seized a black .177 calibre Swiss Arms pellet gun and matching ammunition from a September 3 search, search warrant records filed with the court show.

Single counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence and property mischief were filed. A suspect is due for arraignment November.

Allegations against Terry Wayne Colp, 71, have not been tested in court and he is presumed innocent.

Meanwhile, a pair of sex charges against a 69-year-old man dating back to the 1980s continue to navigate the legal system. The charges were filed in June.

Allegations against Michael Lynn Wentzell have not been tested in court and he is presumed innocent.
