Queens supports groups through community fund

Two local organizations requested and will receive money from the Region of Queens Municipality's (RQM's) fund geared toward supporting community programs.

The fund, now in its third year, provides financial help to groups or organizations in RQM by supporting capital or operating expenses.

The Participant Assistance and Care Autism Nova Scotia Society requested $111,773 in new capital money toward its play park project that will be located off Old Cobb's Barn Road. It will be owned and operated by RQM. Construction is expected to begin next spring

This money was approved in 2020 with the stipulation that construction would begin in the same year. The prior approved money was $99,750 (2020) or 25 per cent of what the society expected to raise. This was placed into a reserve and the agreement was extended for a year. At the council's September 28 meeting, civic politicians approved the new amount.

The Liverpool Curling Club will also receive cash. The club gets $9,000 to purchase pre-printed rings (a vinyl mesh sheet) that emulates the painted sheets.

The pre-printed sheets are expected to last at least 10 years.

Each year, RQM makes $175,000 available via the fund. The deadline for operational funding applications is the end of January each year. All other funds are available for application throughout the year beginning April 1 until all the money is committed.
