NEW ROSS - The annual spring New Ross horse and ox pulls were held May 7 at the New Ross Fairgrounds.

Last year the event was held over two weekends because of COVID-19 protocols, so to have both events on the same day just added to the hype.

Fallon Rafuse, secretary for the host New Ross Farmers Association, said there seemed to be a lot of anticipation leading up to the day.

"We had a lot of inquiries leading up to this year's event asking if it was going to be still a go," she said. "There were at least a couple of hundred people that came through the gates. The bleachers were full all day."

There were 15 pairs of horses and 24 pairs of steers and oxen competing.

Next up for the association is the New Ross Community fair that will be held August 19-20 with a full schedule marking the return of power saw competitions, exhibits, entertainment, Christmas tree judging, fair games and much more.

Last year's event was pared down to just three events with oxen and horse pulls and light horse riding.
