QMJHL captain from Bridgewater hosts week-long hockey camp

BRIDGEWATER - Giving back.

Bridgewater's-own Luke Woodworth, 19, who grew up playing his minor hockey on the South Shore, wants to give back to his community by offering a five-day hockey camp.

"In talking with my dad (Shawn), we decided to put on a hockey school this summer. I thought I am at the age now that I would be able to give back and share some knowledge with the next generation of hockey players," he said. "It was something I really appreciated when I was a kid, so I'm pretty excited to launch that this summer."

The camp will take place July 22 through 26 and will be divided into three age groups: u9, u11 and u13. There will be a limit of 30 players per division.

Last year, Woodworth put on two mini camps, one during the summer and one over Christmas and both were dubbed a success.

Helping him with be his father, a long-time minor hockey coach along with guest coach Tyler Naugler, head coach of the Saint Mary's Huskie's men's team; Will Chisholm, Charlie Dafonseca, Matt Macdonald, Mason Beck, Leighton Carruthers, Ben Allison, Jeremy Robar and Jake Goobie.

Also during the week, a coaching seminar will be on the agenda.

"We want to bring coaches from the South Shore together, put our minds together and talk to each other as a group. I think this will be good for the community and minor hockey on the South Shore," said Woodworth.

Woodworth, 19, is in his fourth year with the Drummondville Voltigeurs of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League and was named the captain of the team in January 2023. He is on pace for his best season yet with 19 goals and 32 assists for 51 points in 44 games(as of Jan. 22).

Woodworth said that his season is going well.

"It's been going well. It's my fourth year hear and I'm really feeling comfortable and we have a real good team this year," he said. "I'm happy with my season. I think it's my best to date. Being an older player in the league comes with a little extra confidence."

What's it like to be a captain in the Q? "It one a captain in this league, it's pretty special and something I don't take for granted," as he reflected on his career thus far.
