It’s time for the great Lunenburg Easter egg hunt

LUNENBURG - The hunt is on once again!

Children, young and old, are invited to join in on the annual Easter egg hunt once again to hunt for the delectable chocolate amongst the grounds at the Lunenburg Academy March 30 beginning at 10 a.m.

Sarah Edwards, along with friend, Stephanie Hersey, decided to begin the tradition almost a decade ago.

"It just started with just Stephanie and I, and we've been doing it successfully for the past seven years and it just keeps growing," said Edwards in an interview March 20.

"We are getting so many participants and that's amazing," she said, noting that at least 200 children came out last year. "But our worry is that we may not have enough eggs to make everyone happy."

Last year more than 36 kilograms of chocolate was donated and distributed and although donations had picked up a bit during the last couple of days prior to the interview, she is hoping that more people will come on board to donate eggs or money to purchase the eggs.

"We want to make sure that all of the children leave with an ample amount of chocolate to make their day," said Edwards.

Last year, for the first time, it was asked that all participants to bring an item for the food bank, which was well received and a cart-load full of goods was donated. This year, this tradition will continue, if people are able to do so.

Also attending the event for the past few years were members of the Lunenburg volunteer fire department, who came and helped out with some crowd control and they allowed the children to take a look at their gear and truck, which added to the fun of the day.

The hunt will take place behind the Academy grounds and along with an area for everyone to search, there will also be a smaller space for children under two years age to safely take part in the event as well.
