It could be described as a case of the right person being in the right place at the right time.

Fire Captain John Long was in the Liverpool Fire Hall teaching first-aid when the building's fire alarm went off at about 8:35 a.m. on the morning of January 5.

"There was a small fire that started in the workshop at the back of the hall," explained Long. "We are still trying to figure out what happened."

He discovered the fire when he went to open the door to the workshop to get a key to check an alarm panel.

Long said the fire was extinguished within about 15 minutes of the alarm going off, and was contained to one corner of the workshop, which is used to store extra gear and equipment.

The fire vehicles were moved outside as a precaution. By noon, everything was cleaned up, aired out, the sprinkler system reset and insurance officials were on site.

There was no damage to firefighting equipment as a result of the fire and there was no estimate on the damage to the building as of press time.

Meanwhile, Captain Long was appreciative of how the event panned out.

"It could have been worse," he said.
